Al Amana started operations in 1997 as a non-profit “Association” under the 18/97 Microcredit Association law. Al Amana is the largest MFI in Morocco with 2,152 employees and 463 branches. As of March 2012, Al Amana has a client outreach of 296,262 clients and an outstanding loan portfolio of over MAD 1.96 billion (USD 230.6 million), making it the largest MFI in the MENA region. Al Amana has a strong commitment to transparency, reducing costs to its clients, and minimizing over-indebtedness. Al Amana’s ambition is to be a market leader in the sector and to maintain its leadership through its outreach, performance and innovation. Al Amana is in the top 100 of the best MFIs in the world and was awarded several international prizes.

In December 2011, Grameen-Jameel signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Al Amana Microfinance. The MoU establishes a partnership between the two organizations to facilitate access to affordable financial services to underprivileged individuals in Morocco.
